Brass Plain Surveyor's Compass by Benjamin Cole, signed on the limb B. Cole, Maker, at No. 136 Fleet St., London , with 4-inch dia. silvered dial, eight-point rose with foliate-engraved and hatched decoration, fleur-de-lis at North and divisions 0-90° in four quadrants, needle ring divided from west 0-360° , blued-steel needle with engraved N and S tips, brass lifting arm, and one (of two) screw-on sights, lg. 13 3/4 in., in original hollowed-out shaped field case, (one limb replaced, lacking thumb screws to limb). Literature: Silvio Bedini, (1975), Thinkers and Tinkers , fig. 27, for a similar Benjamin Cole plain surveyor's compass. Bedini suggests that the instrument was made for use in the American colonies.
