Leon Volkmar Durant Kilns Glazed Art Pottery Platter, New York, 1915, Persian blue glaze on circular form, impressed mark, Durant, 1915, and signed "Volkmar," (some glaze losses,) dia. 15 1/4 in. Note: This platter was part of the Bruce Museum exhibition in Greenwich, Connecticut. Volkmar worked with Rice, owner of Durant Kilns, on creative design and finishing. He continued Durant pottery after Rice's death. When the pottery closed, Volkmar continued to make pottery and teach until his death in 1959. Volkmar was known for his ability to capture the glazes so popular in the Orient, but elusive in the making for American potters, Unfortunately, the recipes were buried with him.
