Albertus van Beest (Dutch, 1820-1860) Pulling in the Nets Signed and dated "A van Beest 1855" l. r. Oil on canvas, 15 x 28 in. (38.1 x 71.0 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, scattered retouch, fine craquelure. N.B. Dutch marine artist, Albert van Beest's love of the sea began from hearing exciting tales from the seamen of his native Rotterdam. As a young man, he accompanied Prince Henry of the Netherlands on voyages to the Mediterranean, sketching the land and seascapes en route. In 1845, van Beest immigrated to the United States, settling in New York. In the mid 1850s, van Beest moved to Massachusetts, teaching and collaborating with fellow marine artist William Bradford. The lining is adhered with wax. The retouch is minor scattered dots and dashes. The craquelure is fine and stable.
