Manuel Joachim de Franca (American, 1808-1865) PATRIAE PATER /Portrait of George Washington. Signed "MFranca pinxit" l.r. Oil on canvas, 17 1/4 x 14 1/4 in., in a later gilt gesso frame. Condition: Relined, retouch to face. Note: Manuel Joachim de Franca came to America from Portugal, where he studied art at the Academy of Art in Lisbon. While there, a civil war broke out forcing him and his family to escape. The family was separated, his parents went to Brazil, and Manuel came to Philadelphia where he was befriended by American portrait painter Thomas Sully who encouraged de Franca to paint. He later settled in St. Louis where he painted many of its prominent citizens.
