Walter Tandy Murch (American, 1907-1967) Still Life with Rock Fragments Signed "Walter Murch" l. l. Oil on board, 14 1/4 x 14 1/4 in. (36.2 x 36.2 cm), framed. Condition: Retouch, varnish inconsistencies, surface grime. N.B. Walter Tandy Murch was born in Canada in 1907. He first studied art at the Ontario College of Art, and in 1927, moved to New York to study art at the Art Students League. There, he met Arshile Gorky, who greatly influenced Murch's artistic style. Although painting during the heyday of abstraction, Murch maintained his individual aesthetic of combining modern objects with items traditionally used in still life paintings. In this work, Murch humanizes and romanticizes the technological advancements of his day through atmosphere and dramatic lighting.
