Large New Mexican Polychrome Wood Retablo, 19th century, tempera and gesso on hand-adzed panel, depicting Our Lady of Guadalupe, attributed to Pedro Antonio Fresquis, 27 1/4 x 14 1/2 in. Provenance: Reverend Thomas Phelan. Note: Pedro Antonio Fresquis (also called the Truchas Master), 1749-1831, buried at the Santuraio de Chimayo, considered the first native born New Mexican Santero. Exhibition: The Cross and the Sword, San Diego, 1976.
