Carved Wooden "Jiggs & Maggie" Cartoon Character Figures, America, c. 1920, standing figures, each carved from a piece of pine, with worn painted features, Maggie wears wirework earrings, ht. 7 1/2, 9 1/2 in. Note: Jiggs and Maggie were the main characters in the comic strip Bringing Up Father, created by George McManus that ran from January 12, 1913 to May 28, 2000, but most readers know the strip as Jiggs and Maggie. The comic strip was about an Irish a mason named Jiggs and his washerwoman wife Maggie, who live in the United States and gain sudden wealth by winnning the Irish Sweepstakes. Jigg still wants to keep his old pals, eat corned beef and cabbage, and hang out at the tavern, much to the consternation of his social climbing wife, Maggie.
