Carl Georg Adolph Hasenpflug (German, 1802-1858) Klester Ruin... um Winter Abine / A Halberstadt View Signed and dated "Hasenpflug 1855" l.l., identified on a period label affixed to the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 52 x 39 1/2 in. (132.1 x 100.3 cm), in a period frame. Condition: Minor retouch, tears (some reinforced with tape on the reverse), tears/damage to the tacking edge, abrasions with losses, mild craquelure, heavy surface grime. N.B. Working in the Romantic style, Hasenpflug painted architectural views, often of German cathedrals or ruins during winter. Born to a Berlin shoemaker, Hasenpflug studied with Carl William Gropius and attended the Berlin Academy. He grew very popular during his lifetime for his evocative and highly detailed works and, along with Eduard Gaertner, Johann Erdmann Hummel, and Johann Heinrich Hintze, is recognized as one of the leading German architectural painters of his time.
