Lionel Walden (American, 1861-1933) Breaking Waves Signed "LIONEL WALDEN" l. r. Oil on canvas, 24 x 51 1/2 in. (61.0 x 130.8 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, retouch, mild craquelure. N.B. Lionel Walden is recognized as one of Hawaii's foremost seascape painters. Walden was born in Connecticut and studied with Carolus Duran in Paris where he was recognized at the Paris Salon and was made a Knight at the French Legion of Honor. He moved to Hawaii in 1911 at the encouragement of friend and fellow artist, Kimo Wilder. There, the rich variety of color and vigorous movement of the Hawaiian waters provided inspiration for Walden's lively and energetic compositions.
