Hernstein, New York, comprising two steel trephines with lacquered-brass shafts, cross-hatched ebony handle, brush, and lid compartment containing elevator, Hey Saw and Liston knife with ebony handles, in brass-banded mahogany case with escutcheon on lid engraved U.S.A. , fitted velvet-lined interior, American Eagle stamp and maker's label of H. Hernstein, No. 393 Broadway, N.Y. listing contents, wd. 7 3/4 in. Note: Originally owned by Dr. Viles of Lowell, Massachusetts, during the Civil War. The set retailed for $11, and shows little evidence of use.
