José Villegas y Cordero (Spanish, 1844-1921) Along the Canal Signed "Villegas" l. l., a label from Giuseppe Biasutti affixed to the reverse. Oil on panel, 13 x 19 1/2 in. (33.0 x 49.5 cm), in a frame attributed to Kahlil George Gibran (American, b. 1922). Condition: Minor retouch. Provenance: A private New England collection. N.B. Cordero was born in Seville, where he began his studies, and worked in both Spain and Italy. He began painting Venetian views starting around 1877.
