Conrad Wise Chapman (American, 1842-1913) On the Beach Monogrammed and dated "CWC 1886" l. l. Oil on panel, 5 1/2 x 8 3/4 in. (14.0 x 22.2 cm), framed. Condition: Retouch, mild craquelure, unobtrusive surface grime. N.B. Conrad W. Chapman was born in 1842 in Washington, D.C. His family moved to Rome when he was a child where he was encouraged to paint by his father. After moving back to the United States in 1861 at age 19, Chapman enlisted with the Confederate Army. He was soon ordered to create pictorial records of the Confederate's defense of Charleston Harbor and other battles. After taking leave due to family illness, Chapman returned to an already surrendered South. He followed Confederate General John B. Magruder to Mexico, where he focused on painting Mexican landscapes.
