Hsiung Ping Ming [Xiong Bingming] (Chinese/French, 1922-2000) Crane Incised signature and date "PING MING... 63" on base. Welded iron, 17 3/4 x 24 1/4 x 3 3/4 in. (45.1 x 61.6 x 9.5 cm) Condition: Minor surface grime. N.B. Hsiung Ping-Ming was a Chinese expatriate sculptor, calligrapher, and art critic, who lived and worked in Paris, for several decades. While in graduate school studying philosophy, Hsiung Ping-Ming met Marcel Gimond, a professor at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. He was so inspired by Gimond that he abandoned his doctoral thesis and enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in 1950 to train with him. (1) He also attended classes at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, and would later work with Ossip Zadkine, whose deconstructed approach to figuration can be seen in the present work. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Hsiung exhibited in Paris, participating in such shows as the Salon d'Automne, la Jeune Sculpture, the Salon de Realites Nouvelles, and the Salon de Mai. He held a one-man exhibition at Iris Clert Gallery, Paris in 1956, and in 1999, was the subject of a traveling retrospective, An Odyssey Abroad and Back: Hsiung Ping Ming's Art, at the National Museum of History, Taipei, the Museum of Fine Art, Beijing, the Shanghai Museum of Fine Art, Kunming City Museum in Yunnan, and the Mountain Art Museum in Kaohsiung.
