Federal Mahogany Inlaid Carved Sling-seat "Campeachy" Armchair, Mid-Atlantic states, 1810-25, the demilune veneered crest outlined in inlaid banding centers an oval reserve and overhangs shaped, padded, hinged wings above the serpentine arms outlined in inlaid banding with neoclassically carved supports on a curule base joined by turned stretchers with an original stamped black leather seat and early surface, (repairs), ht. 40 1/2, seat rail, 15 in. Provenance: Deaccessioned by an historical society. Literature: The Worlds of Thomas Jefferson at Monticelloby Susan Stein, Abrams, Inc. Publishers, pictures and describes a similar Campeachy chair, pp. 280-281. The text elaborated on Jefferson's extensive use of a campeachy chair, particularly in his later years:" while too weak to sit up the whole day and afraid to increase the weakness by lying down, I long for a Siesta chair, which would have admitted the medium position. I must therefore pray you to send by Henry the one made by Johnny Hemmings..." It has been repaired, but not extensively, and is quite stable. Restoration behind the left side head -pad. Excellent color and grain match.There is a metal bracket stabilizing the back of one side at the arm. There are number of small unobtrusive repairs - to the arm, the arm supports, and the base.
