Silk Needlework Picture of "Adelaide" the Shepherdess of the Alps, probably England, early 19th century, worked in silk and chenille threads on a silk ground with painted face and hands, titled below, (minor toning and thread loss), dia. 12 in., in a period eglomise mat with round aperture in a molded giltwood frame. Note: The play "The Shepherdess of the Alps" about a young shepherdess mourning the death of her husband by suicide, was popular among Americans and a popular choice for girls' needlework pictures in the academies of the early 1800s. Unobtrusive thread losses in a 1 x 1 1/2 in. area at u.r.
