J. H. Gillespie, (Anglo-American, active 1810-1838) Silhouette Portrait of a Gentleman. The artist, active in Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York, and Eastport, Maine, identified on printed label on paper affixed to reverse of frame. Pigment on paper heightened with gum arabic, c. 1835, depicting a bust-length portrait of a gentleman, oval format, 3 x 2 1/2 in., in original rectangular ebonized wood frame with gilt metal surround. Condition: Very good, minor toning.
