Shaker Walnut and Tiger Maple Table, probably Groveland, New York, 1860-70, the walnut top that overhangs this piece is removable, secured by two cleats with four long removable wooden pegs, above the drawer and tiger maple legs, which have outer-edge beading, with original wooden pull, old surface, (a small piece of drawer molding is missing), ht. 30 1/4, top wd. 30, top dp. 22 5/8 in. Note: This piece includes some similarities to Emmory Brooks's (1807-91) work, such as the use of walnut, as well as beading on the outer edges of the posts or legs and some exposed joinery. He worked in the Groveland Shaker community, where they used heavy walnut, according to The Complete Book of Shaker Furniture by Timothy Rieman and Jean Burks, Abrams, Inc., 1993, p. 362, # 339. This publication indicates that the Groveland Shaker community was situated midway between the eastern New York and Ohio communities, p. 351.
