Nicholas Cammillieri (Maltese, ac. 1819-1858) Ship Alfred of Salem/Joseph Felt Master/Leaving Marseilles October 6, 1806. Signed and dated l.r., titled below. Watercolor and gouache on laid paper with gold foil stripe on border, 17 1/2 x 24 in., in a later molded wooden frame. Condition: Minor margin tear u.r., minor light stain u.c. margin, strip of paper applied to right and left margin. Note: The ship Alfred was built in 1805 in Salem, Massachusetts. She was 260 tons later altered to 217 tons for a privateer in 1812. She mounted sixteen guns and carried 100 men. In 1814 she was captured by the British. There is a small hole, about 1/8 in., outside of the blue l.l. margin and is not in the image. The tear at u.r. is about 3/4 in. It is in the blue margin and does not go into the image.
