Portrait Miniature of a Sea Captain, c. 1820, watercolor on ivory, showing an oval bust-length portrait of the seaman wearing a blue coat with black velvet collar and brass buttons, with a ship in the distance on the left and a spit of land on the right, 2 1/4 x 1 7/8 in., in a later gilt-brass frame. Condition: Very good. Provenance: Joan Brownstein. The area of sky to right of sitter is lighter and the brushstrokes are not as defined as other areas of background, it may be a little smudged or done on purpose to highlight the area.
