Fine Khlebnikov Goldwashed, Enameled, and Jeweled Silver Casket, Moscow, 1908-17, with Imperial warrant mark, rectangular, with side lifting handles, the hinged lid with sloping sides, and mounted to center with an enamel on copper painting A Boyar Wedding Feast by the painter Konstantin Makovsky, with in green and red cabochon jeweled borders, the corners of box with opaque green sugarloaf jewels, box with all over fine cloisonne enameling of scrolling vines and geometrics, interior goldwashed, interior of lid engraved with monogram EKB and dated 1913, ht. 5 3/8, wd. 8 5/8, dp. 6 3/4 in., in original Khlebnikov Baltic birch case, approx. 62 troy oz. The original painting by Makovsky, painted in 1883, resides in the collection of The Hillwood Museum in Washington, DC. SCENE TO LID IS ENAMEL ON COPPER, NOT ON IVORY, AND NOT UNDER GLASS. Frame around the plaque was removed to ascertain this, which also revealed a few edge chips to the enamel plaque, which mainly are not visible when placed back onto box and under frame, except for a 1/4" surface flake to l.r. corner. Plaque itself is 5 1/4 x 3 1/4". Condition: box good, with one of the tiny green cabochon stones to corner of frame around lid scene chipped. marks good. birch case needs to have joinery reglued; some scratching. Satin lining entirely removeable.
