(War of 1812), McMechen, Samuel, two autograph letters signed, dated August 3rd and September 21st, 1814, one page and three pages, respectively, the first to Governor James Barbour of Virginia, recommending the Hardy County militia to join the ranks, "he has a hardy band of mountain lads who have marched with almost unparalleled alacrity at their country's call to repel the invading foe"; the second to Capt. David Vaumeter (?), discussing the progress of the war and the health of the men, 4to, (first with minor fold weakness, second with last leaf chewed and right marginal loss of some text, separations along folds).
