Woiciech (Aldabert) Ritter von Kossak (Polish, 1856-1942) Lancers at Rest Signed and dated "Wojciech Kossak 1932" l. r. Oil on canvasboard, 20 x 15 3/4 in. (50.8 x 39.9 cm), framed. Condition: Curve to support, minor scattered retouch, craquelure. N.B. Polish artist, Woiciech Kossak was the son of the artist Juliusz Kossak and the father of artist Jerzy Kossak. He studied in Paris, at the Munich Academy, and the Krakow School of Fine Arts. Kossak traveled widely throughout his career and painted portraits and historical scenes, although he is most remembered for his military and battle scenes celebrating his native Poland. The curve to the support is unobtrusive. The retouch is minor dots and dashes, plus broad areas of the clouds near the upper left. The craquelure appears stable, but has areas of separation. The painting might benefit from a gentle cleaning.
