Sailor-made Inlaid Wooden Mackerel Splitter, 19th century, the shaft inlaid with steel mackerel figure and inscribed with the initials "TC," including stand, lg. 8 1/4 in. Note: When fishing from their boats whalemen would use the mackerel splitter to dress the fish by splitting the fish down the back. Then they would clean out the entrails and blood and salt them before layering them in storage barrels.
