Chippendale Mahogany Lolling Chair, probably Portsmouth, New Hampshire, 1760-80, the shaped crest above the serpentine arms supported by a scrolled design at the base over frontal square legs joined to similar raking ones by a stretcher, (a very minor imperfection), ht. 44 1/2, seat ht. 14 in. Note: The scrolled design at the base of the arm support, long considered a characteristic of the Newburyport cabinetmaker Joseph Short, has been determined to be a Portsmouth, New Hampshire, design. imperfection--hairline crack at top of arm support; secondary wood birch.
