Ammi Phillips (American, 1788-1865) Portrait of Walter Smith Lyon (1790-1867) of Bedford, Westchester County, New York. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 34 x 28 in., in likely original molded wood frame with gilt liner. Condition: Relined, scattered small spots of retouch to forehead, cheek, and jacket, retouch to background, u.r. Provenance: Family descent to Mrs. Herbert B. Howe, Mt. Kisco, New York, then to consignor's mother, and then to consignor. This portrait is listed in Ammi Phillips: Portrait Painter 1788-1865, by Barbara and Lawrence Holdridge, on p. 48. Walter Smith Lyon was a farmer and Methodist preacher. Accompanying this painting is an 1862 survey map of Westchester County and shows an illustration of Mr. Lyon's home, third from left along the bottom.
