Hermann Herzog (German/American, 1832-1932) Fishing in the Everglades Signed "H. Herzog" l.r., "765" inscribed on a period piece of white cloth affixed to the stretcher, "H-272" inscribed on a label affixed to the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 16 x 14 in. (40.6 x 35.6 cm), framed. Condition: Possibly restretched by the artist, retouch, extremely minor scattered craquelure. N.B. Herzog immigrated to the United States in 1869 and traveled extensively throughout the country over the course of his career. He is best known for his realist landscapes that reflect the rich variety of American terrain. Herzog began visiting Florida in the 1880s and his landscapes capture the vibrant color and bright, atmospheric light of the area. The cloth inscribed "765" affixed to the reverse indicates that this piece was probably included on an inventory list of the artist's studio done at the time of his death.
