Cast Iron Newfoundland Dog Garden Ornament, America, late 19th century, the figure cast in the full round, painted dark gray, ht. 35, lg. 54 1/2 in. Note: This cast iron Newfoundland dog figure once stood on the property of Little Bear Kennels in Milford, Connecticut which began in 1948. The kennels were owned and operated by Vadim and Margaret Booth Chern, breeders of more than 100 champion Newfoundlands, and a successive line of nine generations of Best in Show and/or Group winners. Margaret Chern wrote the book The Complete Newfoundland, and later the New Complete Newfoundland, Howell Book House Inc., New York, publisher. A similar cast iron figure is pictured on p. 34. A copy of New Complete Newfoundland, is included with the figure.
