American School, 18th Century Miniature Portrait of a Gentleman. Unsigned. Watercolor on ivory, 2 3/4 x 2 in., in an oval gilt copper case with chased bezel and hanger. Condition: Very good. Provenance: By family descent. Note: According to a note taken from family history inscriptions kept with the miniature "General Samuel Hopkins's daughter Elizabeth Branch Hopkins married Brig. Gen. Philip Barbour, Virginia (Speaker of the House 1821). Daughter Sarah Elizabeth Barbour married William S. Jones in 1834. Daughter Alice Daschiell Jones married Horace E. Garth." The information given and the style of clothing portrayed indicates that the portrait might be of Brigadier General Philip Barbour.
