Jean Souverbie (French, 1891-1981) La Nuit Signed and dated "Souverbie 58" (incised) l. r., identified on a fragmentary label from the Agence Maritime Delamare, Paris, affixed to the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 17 1/4 x 25 1/2 in. (43.8 x 64.8 cm), framed. Condition: Surface grime, craquelure. Provenance: A private New England collection. N.B. Born in Billancourt, France, Jean Souverbie was a student at the Académie Rason. Influenced by Cubism, Souverbie created balanced compositions that played with proportions and distortions. His work was exhibited at the Galerie Vavin-Raspail alongside paintings by Picasso and Marcoussis. Later in his life, Souverbie became the head professor at École de Beaux-Arts.
