William (Karl) Hahn (German/American, 1829-1887) Snow Day/Sledding on the Boston Common Signed and dated "Wm. Hahn 1877" l.r. Oil on canvas, 17 x 26 1/2 in. (43.1 x 67.3 cm), framed. Condition: Retouch, surface grime, craquelure. Provenance: Private New England collection. N.B. Born in Germany, Hahn studied in Dresden and Dusseldorf. It was in the latter city that he met American painter William Keith, and by 1871, Hahn was sharing a studio with Keith in Boston. The two subsequently shared a studio in San Francisco as well.
