Signed Shaker Walnut Tool Box, Enfield, Connecticut, c. 1881, rectangular box with paneled top, applied molding, dovetailed construction, hinged lid opens to interior fitted with a lift-out tray, the underside is inscribed "Gilbert Avery 1881, (stains) ht. 12, wd. 26 3/4, dp. 14 5/8 in. Provenance: Purchased from the warden at Enfield, Connecticut when the community was closing. Note: According to a note affixed to the underside of the tray Gilbert Avery was born in 1808, signed the North Family Shaker Covenant, November 28, 1850, died January 5, 1908 at the age of 100, and is buried in the Shaker cemetery at Enfield, Connecticut.
