Youqua, (Chinese, active 1840-70) View of the Hongs at Canton. Original Youqua label affixed to stretcher on reverse. Oil on canvas depicting Canton with the two new buildings on the right prior to the erection of the church in 1847. An unusual feature is the Red Ensign flying in front of the British factory rather than the usual Union Jack, 18 x 24 in., in a period Chinese beveled frame. Condition: Restorations and craquelure. Provenance: According to family tradition this painting descended through the family to the great grandchildren of a man who was a supercargo for Crocker and Sturgis of Boston.
