Dogon people (Western Africa (Mali)), 20th century. A Dogon medicine pot made of carved wood in three sections, the whole comprising a hogon figure at top seated on a donkey standing atop a sphere sliced at center with the inverted section hollowed out to interior as a cup, the lower hemisphere integrally mounted to a second larger sphere sliced at the top 1/3 and lifting off to reveal an interior cavity often used to store butter and tobacco and also for mixing medicines, this lower sphere covered in incised geometric patterning and supported by central shaft surrounded by a ring of sculptural tribal figures standing on a round platform supported by two figural donkeys on a round integral base.
