ENGLISH CARVED OAK BENCH WITH CANOPY, 1800, H 92", W 61", D 22":Four painted half-length portraits at the back, the center two figures each depicted with a martyr's palm, one of whom holds a tower, possibly St. Barbara, flanked by two reverent figures (possibly portraits of the patrons), above a hinged seat opening to storage. In black paint on bottom: "Shipped from Koopman & Co. 324 Fifth Ave. New York 1903". Nicely carved detail including vines and thistles; half columns flank center portraits and carved panels. Inside of canopy is decorated with tooled leather. From St. Martha's Episcopal Church, 15801 Joy Road, Detroit, a church built and furnished by Clara and Henry Ford I; the Fords are buried in the church cemetery. (rev.20070515)
