"Throughout her life Kate Starling chose occupations that placed her in remote regions---as a geologist, river guide, forest firefighter and national park ranger. She started her professional life as a park ranger for the National Park Service in Utah. Exposure to the outdoors inspired her to pursue a degree in painting at Southern Utah University, and she followed this with a graduate degree in painting at the University of Oregon.
