AFTER M. C. ESCHER (DUTCH 1898-1972), BROWN POLYESTER RESIN SCULPTURE, DIA. 5", "SPHERE WITH FISH":With non-original oriental stand. Probably (or possibly) of brown polyester resin; initialed and dated '1940' but the ball is from 1972 or later and probably posthumous; no edition number found on this ball as other examples of it have - this ball may be a copy of the limited edition ball. Includes an M.C. Escher German book with the original wood sculpture pictured and described in it. Provenance: ex. Coll. Frederick M. Bayer, Emeritus Curator of the Smithsonian Institutions Museum of Natural History. A marine biologist specializing in soft corals, Bayer knew well Emperor of Japan Hirohito (himself a marine biologist). Bayer was at the Smithsonian from 1947-1961 and again from 1975-1996 and was a world wide traveler and amassed an extensive art collection.
