Rare Polynesian Tapa Cloth Poncho, Tahiti, 19th century, the rectangular pullover with European cloth edged neck hole, with wide pinked fringe down the sides, decorated on both sides with handpainted panels of dark brown geometric patterns, traces of light yellow details, written on a lower panel "Litfelika Makila Meleke Lalotoga Tahiti," lg. with fringe 53 in. Provenance: Collected by a New England ship captain and descended in his family.
