Rare Melanesian Carved Wood House Post, New Caledonia, carved in the form of a standing male figure wearing European clothing, (possibly representing a missionary), the circular face with simple features, traces of black and white pigment, (wood loss), ht. 34 1/2 in. Provenance: Collected by Nicholas Eduard Imhaus, who explored the South Seas in the 1880s. He became a mining engineer and settled in the United States where he sold his collection to the city of Portland, Oregon, in 1912.
