James Beers Paint-Decorated Waywiser, with 21-inch diameter spoked metal-rimmed wheel with geared drive to 5-inch diameter painted dial with divisions 0-10 and signature Jas. M. Beers, Maker, 1875 , the wood frame with original red paint and faded yellow decoration, double handles and recessed compartment with hinged lid, mounting-dowel and supports (for compass and sights ?), lg. 64 in. Note: James Morris Beers (1841 - 1918) of New Haven, Connecticut, seems to have produced a series of similar waywisers. He was presumably related to Smith Beers who obtained a patent for a waywiser (or odometer) in 1839.
