Kodai-ji Lacquer Letter Box, Japan, late 17th century, the lid and box decorated with gold and silver foil in hiramaki-e and takamaki-e on a sprinkled gold ground depicting flowering paulownia branches on a diagonal ground of fine branches, the diagonal design extends onto the interior of lid and the box, the lid also depicting a courtier playing a flute seated on a horse, the silk tassels are mounted with shakudo metal baskets, lg. 8 1/2 in.
