Benz and Thomas Gold Tourbillion Watch, George Thomas and Adolph Benz, Switzerland, no. 2, c. 1985, open face watch with Roman numeral porcelain dial marked Benz & Thomas and Swiss Made , delicate pierced blued steel hands, the open back with crystal revealing full plate jeweled movement signed No. 2/Benz & Thomas/Switzerland , with minute tourbillion escapement fitted to an 1883 Waltham nickel frame, all in a felt-lined carrying case with extra dial, crystal, and mainspring. Note: Mr. George Thomas of Maryland achieved considerable acclaim by redesigning other manufacturer's plates and escapements and fitting them with a cage design tourbillion of his own manufacture. He teamed up with Adolph Benz to produce ten copies, the present example being no. 2. For additional information on Benz and Thomas and their tourbillion remanufactures, see NAWCC Bulletin , June 1998. Three of Thomas's prototype watches are in the collection of the National Watch and Clock Museum, Columbia, Pennsylvania. Like new, running condition.
