J. Auricoste à Paris, No. 554, circa 1930. Fine mahogany 49 hour going marine chronometer with power reserve indication and electric impulse contactors. Three body mahogany box with external brass handles, glazed upper section with hinged lid. Brass circular gimbal and bowl. Silvered with Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds and up-and-down sector. Gilt brass "spade" hands. Brass full plate with cylindrical pillars, fusee with chain and maintaining power, Earnshaw type spring detent escapement, two-arm compensation balance with poising weights and timing screws, free sprung blued steel helical balance spring with terminal curves, diamond end-stone. Signed on the dial. In very good condition. Dial diam. 85 mm. Notes Such chronometers were used in observatories for the synchronisation of 1/100 second recorder chronograph, it was also used for car races and for recording speed records in the 1930's. In 1935, Jules Auricoste was in charge of the collection at the Musée National des Techniques (C.N.A.M.) Paris. The famous Horloge Marine made by Pierre Le Roy was restored by him.
