“Brillie Electric Master Clock” Electrique Brillie Fres. , No. H973, retailed by J. Auricoste, Horloger de la Marine de l’Etal. Made in the 1920s. Fine and rare, gilt brass and marble electric “master” wall regulator with center seconds, 24-hour dial and half-second gridiron pendulum. Rectangular, brass frame with bevelled glass panels, white and grey marble backboard. White enamel with radial Roman numerals, inner Arabic 24-hour numerals, outer minute and seconds track. Blued steel “Breguet” hands. Brass with electrical contacts and glass battery housing, Invar gridiron pendulum with spherical brass bob, “U” shaped iron magnet, electric coil, regulator for fine adjustment. Dial signed. Dim. 45 x 25 x 13 cm. Property of a French Gentleman Notes The Brillie Master clock was a French invention which was originally used by the Paris Observatory to transmit time signals to it’s slave clocks. It has a 1/2 second pendulum made of Invar with a “U” shaped magnet as the bob, one pole of which passes through an electromagnet, a brass sphere above, which is mounted on a threaded part of the rod is used for regulating the clock. An additional adjustment for fine regulation of the magnetic field uses a small metal mass near the coil.
