Bancroft, George (1800-1891), Presentation Copy, History of the United States... , Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, 1854-75, ten volumes, Volume VI bearing signed autograph note from the author dated October 25, 1854 tipt onto front pastedown, Volume VIII with signed inscription on flyleaf dated June 11, 1860, Volume IX with printed "From the Author" card on pastedown, Volume X with signed inscription on flyleaf dated 1875, cloth, 8vo, (chipped with some spine tears, scattered soiling and spotting, bindings sunned, one board creased, one detached). Note: Inscriptions from Bancroft are to Alice Key Pendleton, daughter of Francis Scott Key, (the author of "The Star-spangled Banner"), and wife of George Hunt Pendleton, member of the House of Representatives from Ohio (1857-1865) and a U.S. Senator (1879-1885). Mrs. Pendleton's set began with the gift of Volume VI from Bandcroft, and was completed thereafter.
