Antoine-Louis Barye (French, 1796-1875) Tigre dévorant un gavial [Tiger Devouring a Gavial] Inscribed "BARYE/18... " on the center left side of the base. Bronze with brown patina, 4 1/8 x 4 1/8 x 10 3/4 in. (10.5 x 10.5 x 27.5 cm), with an oval wood plinth (detached). Condition: Dust and dirt to interstices. Literature: Stuart Pivar, The Barye Bronzes, A Catalogue Raisonné (Suffolk, England: Antique Collectors Club, 1981), no. A61, p. 41, (illus. p. 142). N.B. Barye exhibited Tiger Devouring a Gavial at the Salon of 1831, winning a second prize medal, garnering critical acclaim, and marking a turning point in his career. The Salon submission was a painted plaster work measuring 40 inches long. Barye subsequently edited the work in two more versions, measuring 20 and 11 inches long. Stuart Pivar writes, "Castings of the small size are often seen in remarkable jewel-like quality where the hide of the crocodile seems real and where trouble has been taken to render the tiny teeth individually in razor sharpness."1 1.
