Black-painted Turned Side Chair, New England, late 18th/early 19th century, with vase- and ring-turned posts and "Windsor-type" turned, swelled spindles with bulbous turned front stretcher, old black paint, (imperfections), ht. 40 1/2, seat ht. 16 in. Literature: The Impecunious Collector's Guide to American Antiques , by John T. Kirk, Knopf, 1975, fig. 42. Kirk sees this as an interesting intersection of three chair types known in the late 18th century.
