Käthe Kollwitz (German, 1867-1945) Die Klage / A Posthumous Casting Signed "KOLLWITZ" within the cast along left side, foundry stamped "ROMAN BRONZE WORKS INC N. Y." and "No. 2-b1" on the base. Bronze with dark brown patina, 10 5/8 x 10 3/8 in. (27.0 x 26.4 cm). Condition: Minor surface grime. Provenance: Collection of Max (1913-1986) and Jeanne (née Jean Leonard) Wasserman (1915-2006), Cambridge, Massachusetts; by family descent to the present owners. N.B. Jeanne L. Wasserman was the Honorary Curator of 19th- and 20th-Century Sculpture at the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University, from 1969-c.1987, the author of Daumier Sculpture: A Critical and Comparative Study , as well as a lecturer at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, Boston. Mrs. Wasserman commissioned the American foundry Roman Bronze Works in 1961 to cast Die Klage in a bronze edition of 3 after one of two original plaster purchased from Hyman Swetzoff of Swetzoff Gallery in December 1958. (1) The work will be included as a posthumous casting in The Catalogue Raisonne of the Sculptural Work by Käthe Kollwitz, prepared by Annette Seeler, and we wish to thank Ms. Seeler for her kind assistance.
