Model of the Nancy Hanks , probably Boston, Massachusetts, late 19th century, the four-masted square-rigged vessel with fine detail, mounted on a walnut veneer inlaid platform, ht. 35, lg. 54 in. Note: The capstan on the deck of the model is embossed "West End Street Railway." Arguably the most significant among the early trolley lines in the country, the West End Street Railways was founded in Boston in 1887 by Henry M. Whitney, who had been president of the Metropolitan Steamship Company. The railway was sold in 1897, eventually to become the Metropolitan Transit Authority, the M.T.A., or the "T" as it is known today.
