Plaque; plaster; painted to resemble terracotta; designed and executed by Warner Williams. A note pasted to the verso claims the relief is designed to in hang in a light which "falls from the right casting a shafow along the profile". The plaque depicts a relief portrait of the 12th century Spanish physician and philosopher, Rabbi Moses Maimonides, alongside the text of the Oath of Maimonide with both identified with labels. Today, Maimonides' rationalistic attempts to reconcile scientific knowlege with faith in God are considered a cornerstone of medical ethics and his Oath, though less well known, is as important to many physicians as the more regularly recited Oath of Hippocrates. Hanging for decades on the walls of Michael Reese Hospital, The Oath of Maimonides woul have been a constant reminder to the founding Jewish physicians of the following: Length 19 inches x height 13 inches.
