One page letter dated October 23, 1943, written on Hollywood Canteen Letterhead, signed by Bette Davis in blue ink Ms. Davis expresses her gratitude to Mr. Hope for greeting British guests at the Hollywood Canteen. The Hollywood Canteen was founded by Bette Davis & John Garfield, modeled after Broadway's "Stage Door Canteen." It opened on October 3, 1942. The Hollywood Canteen was run by volunteers and the stars of Hollywood performed, cooked and cleaned up as a tribute and to support servicemen and women. It was “the place to be” for service men and many of Hollywood's biggest stars. Ms. Davis devoted a lot of time and energy to ensure the canteen served its patrons well. 11 by 8 ½ inches Categories: Bob Hope
